Most overseas drivers licences are valid for use in New Zealand; the same restrictions apply as the country of origin. Riders must be 25 years of age or over for all our motorcycles. Licences must have a motorcycle endorsement for 650cc or above. If your licence is not in English, an international driving permit will be required.

BMW R1200GS

The BMW R1200GS is the bigger man’s bike. Just look at that side view – it’s just pure muscle!

This bike just fills your nostrils with warm summer air, stonking fun to carve up the motorway, or carve a track across a grassy paddock. It has that amazing telelever and paralever suspension tweaked to give just that much more travel to put “adventure” into touring. We might not have desert racing in New Zealand but the South Island of NZ has plenty of underpopulated places to go adventuring. Unlike the other motorcycle rental companies in New Zealand we do not place any restrictions on where you can go – go ahead and adventure!

About the Bikes

Some people have asked – why are Moto Rentals offering so few models of hire bike, when the other rental companies have so many different models? The answer is simple: we’ve done that in the past and now do not believe it is the best option. We have had the experience and luxury of owning 150 touring motorcycles, all different makes and models all at the same time. We’ve personally run them in, varying the speed and load with mineral oil before changing to synthetic, run them across town to get parts, personally run them on day trips and run them for three week tours. We have tested them all and ridden them as they clock over 100,000km, listened to others who have travelled around New Zealand and guided plenty of different riders on different bikes in different seasons on the North and South Islands of this great motorcycling country. We have come to the conclusion that for touring holidays in New Zealand a select few bikes do it best.

The favourite is the BMW R1200RT, we just like the incredible aerodynamics of the fairing, the mirrors with integral indicators flic the cool air off your hands, the electric windscreen just tops it off with very low noise making the sound system a pleasure. Those with shorter legs appreciate the low seat height adjustment and everyone’s butt the comfort on the long haul. It has that amazing telelever (front) and paralever (rear) suspension that just makes high speed cornering such a delight.

Last and may-be least, the BMW G650GS. Now in some situations less is more - that is the case for this bike. The reason you might like a lightweight, nimble bike with enough power to take on tour is this: it is possible to find some public roads in the South Island of NZ that travel through farm land, grassy and/or gravel well-formed tracks and in places not so well maintained weaving up into the mountains and down the other side. Sure you might have to open the odd gate, but this is REAL ADVENTURE! We are not saying anyone should try this, but if you are a good rider then this is a good bike to get you to the trail head, get you over the trail without losing your brake lever, then comfortably ride to your next hotel room.

The other good thing about the G650GS is we offer some with the low seat option. We know that the fairer of our breed may struggle a little getting a 1200cc machine onto the main stand, so the 650 is the perfect lady.

In summary we specialise in 3 BMW models and offer them with the different options available, they are reliable, fuel efficient, fun yet comfortable with some very clever features. Simply the best for New Zealand summer conditions - (November to March).

BMW G650GS

Easy to ride on any road any day. With the G650 GS you will simply have fun.

Whether in town or on the gravel track: with this machine you have every terrain under control. Ride in the South Island of New zealand and you get more than your money's worth when it comes to riding fun. There are plenty of places to really test this machines great handling.

The G 650 GS continues the success story of BMW Motorrad's single cylinder engines in impressive fashion - with a solid output of 50 hp at 6,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 44 lb/ft at 5,000 rpm. The bike offers absolutely sensational fuel consumption levels: 3.2 liters of regular petrol per 100 km at a constant 90 km/h (74 mpg).

The ride feel on the G 650 GS is thrilling - wherever you're going. On the road or over rough terrain - the reliable, tried-and-tested chassis with central spring strut on the swinging fork ensures crisp handling. Membership of the enduro family is highlighted in this machine with the upright seating position and an impressive 170 mm of spring travel at the front with 165 mm (6 ½ inches) at the rear. The moderate standard seat height of 800 mm (31.5 inches) is easy for most people (we do offer the lowered suspension option make this experience accessible to virtually anyone).

The G 650 GS is robust, powerful and yet still extremely light, weighing just 195 kg (430 lbs) with a full tank. With its low fuel consumption and comfortable handling, you can stop and take photos rather than look for the next gas station. Its slim, athletic stature in a youthful and typically enduro-style design stands for uncomplicated riding pleasure and pure fun.

Accessories for the BMW enduro include comfortable hand protectors, aluminum sump guard, a high windshield and practical luggage cases. It also has a center stand makes for improved stability when the luggage is heavy.
